The 18th Malaysian Career and Training Fair

Recently, on the 8th, 9th and 10th of January 2016, the 18th Malaysian Career and Training Fair, co-organised by Jobstreet.com, was held at Mid Valley Exhibition Centre from Friday until Sunday. I went to the fair for 2 days only which were on Friday and Saturday. Personally, I have to say the fair was exciting, full of vigour, and most importantly crowded with people from all walks of life to search for that one job that can either feed them or more than that, their dream job. Interns, fresh graduates, as well as veterans flock the booths available to send out their resumes to be interviewed and get the job.

A lot of companies were available during the fair but I can't help but notice some of the big industry players were not around namely Shell, PETRONAS, Schlumberger, Intel, and many more. But nonetheless, what this fair has to offer was not short as well. Reputable companies both local and overseas were there in search of competent talents to be absorbed into their workforce. Despite being available for only two days at the fair, I have to say, I wasn't even able to finish visiting all the booths at the fair. But having said that, being able to visit a fair number of booths, I was pretty much content although unable to drop not even one single resume was such a waste of time, yet, it really taught me a lot.

The next time I'll be attending a career fair would be to be well prepared with tens or hundreds of resumes at hand to land me that internship that I will be content with. As one of the speakers at the fair said, "You need to be READY before you can get a job." What the speaker meant by 'READY' here is that it is an acronym. It stands for Resume, Energy and Excited, Appearance, Develop soft skills, and Yes!(which I deduce as confident, capable, and grateful). He even went on to stress on how important it is to come to this fair with at least more than 30 copies of your resumes, which no one even went on to admitting they (the visitors) had more than 30 at that time!

The interesting bit about this fair, as I had mentioned earlier, was that not only there were booths for eager jobseekers to drop their resumes but there were also talks and a dedicated resume clinic booth so that jobseekers could get feedbacks regarding their resumes that they have written. But despite all that, If you have been to a career fair before such as Technology Education and Career (TEC) in UTP or any other fair, you will find it quite familiar.

I really look forward to another similar career fair within Malaysia and by then, I will be prepared to drop off my resumes to get the best internship on offer.

Sarawak ICT Expo 2015 in Miri

The Sarawak ICT Expo 2015 is currently being held at Miri Indoor Stadium. The expo is currently being done on Friday until Sunday on the 20th to 22nd of November 2015. This expo is almost similar to PIKOM PC Fair and it is also organised at the same place every year in Miri. A number of new PCs, laptops and electronic gadgets are on display for sale.  Other than the usual consumer affair, corporates and companies can also benefit from the Sarawak ICT Expo as there are some local firms that provide IT solutions to ease and simply IT related tasks for corporates and companies.

For the average consumers, a number of gadgets, PCs, laptops as well as 2nd hand computers are for sale as well. The discounts on offer are not that much but it's worth to get now rather than get it later on regular prices if you really need them. On our outing just now, there was an Oppo mascot to promote Oppo smartphones and liven up the expo. Nonetheless, the expo this year has some interesting offerings but may not be that lively since there is no interesting new product yet.

Majlis Restu Ilmu 2015 Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang Miri

On this blissful Friday of the 30th October 2015, my alma mater, Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang Miri organized an event for students who will be sitting for their SPM and STPM this year to seek blessings from their teachers and their parents.

The event's tentative begins as early as 7 am in the morning for the religious slots up until 8:30 am. Then, the event continues in Dewan Perdana (the new hall) from 9 am until 11 am. After the religious session, the students begin their walk towards the hall.

Students, teachers and parents gather and sit freely in the hall to hear from each student representatives from both the form 5 and form 6 who will be sitting for their SPM and STPM respectively. The students express themselves by showing gratitude to their teachers for teaching them for almost five or six years at school and nonetheless thanked their parents and peers for guiding them towards the path of success. Furthermore, some of them took the opportunity to motivate their peers before sitting for one of the most important exam in their lives.

Amusingly, the opening speech by the headmistress of Kolej Tun Datu Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang Miri, Hajah Hasimah Binti Abang Zen was supposed to be done first before the students' speeches but they were given priority. The headmistress told the parents, if possible, to support the students by helping giving moral support during the exams later on which will be lead by the teachers.

After the speech, teachers, parents, students, and guests were treated by throwbacks photos of students throughout this year which includes classroom photos and teacher's day photos and various other photos. The montage ended with wishes by previous Kolej seniors for current students to ponder upon and feel more motivated before the exam begins.

The event ended with students shaking hands with teachers and parents to signify their gratefulness to them for all of their efforts in nurturing and teaching the students. This moment is full of tear-jerkers so female students had prepared early with tissues with them. The writer would like to take this opportunity to thank the teachers of Kolej Tun Datu Tuanku Haji Bujang who are currently in service, as of 2015, for teaching me back in 2010 and 2011 as well as to those who had leaved Kolej. Without them I may not be able to reach where I am right now.

An Unofficial Statement by ITMS Department

Thursday, 29th of January 2015, a meeting was held between each representative of clubs and societies in UTP with the UTP ITMS Department, one of the staff members representing disclosed to us was what is being something called ICT Blueprint or something similar. The details of this particular has yet been decided on whether to disclose the information to students or not.

Despite that, some informations were shared to us mainly regarding certain exciting and optimistic issues that include:

1. By June 2015, UTP's internet speed will be increased from 200 MB/s to 2 GB/s.
2. New switching system from Cisco will be installed. This will also improve tracking.
3. By March 2015, Block 1 and Block 2 will offer printing services at cheapest prices compared to other service providers.
4. By December 2015, UTP Prism will be replaced by a new system.
5. Discussion with TM and Celcom has been carried out to provide internet services without going through UTP hence students will bear the cost with the internet service providers at student's pricing and the current ethernet port will be used.

Although all this informations are being planned, we are yet to find out whether these deadlines will be met and probably how it will be implemented. So in a nutshell, once an announcement stating us to update any particulars are released, that means UTP has upgraded the system. For now we just have to wait and see.

January 2015 Semester Course Registration

Greetings everyone, I hope that all the UTP students who are currently studying for next semester is prepared. For those who are currently studying for the exams, all the best! Others who are on their 4 months break, welcome back and keep the spirit up!

As we all know, the online registration this time is scheduled from 31st of December until 24th of January 2015 starting at 3:30 pm. The registration website is performed at the usual website: https://studentportal.utp-prism.my/. But as usual, when you are registering at the earliest moments, you will be experiencing issues such as lags, unresponsiveness, logged out, any more. But it is important to register early especially if you are registering for courses that have limited seats such as Co-Curriculum.

This year's semester for both foundation and undergraduate roughly looks like this (excluding public holidays):

The foundation students recently has been getting a long holiday for their semester breaks. Sadly all of us has been enjoying the mid-sem break which has been forfeited.

Greetings January 2015 Trimester!

This 2014 has been a great but challenging year and that it is coming to an end. The September 2014 semester is coming to an end for the undergraduates as they are currently in their study week. Soon they will be facing their exam week and then they will be having a long holiday ahead of them (4 months of holiday is one heck of a holiday though).

Nevertheless, 12 January would be the beginning of lecture for the January 2015 semester both for the foundation studies as well as the undergraduate studies. The freshies shall begin their session on 8th January though as they need to attend the orientation week or Minggu Aluan Siswa (MAS) as we call it.

There have been new rumours though surrounding the foundation students. A good news for them but bad news for us undergraduates though. It involves their rooms to be installed air conditioners and that their hostel fees isn't as expensive as the V3, V4, and V5 counterpart with no air conditioners installed. That's quite a sad news for us old timers as we have been seniors and studied here longer compared to the freshies, if this rumour proves to be true though.

Whereas for course registration and hostel registration, the exact date for the course registration is yet to be announced by the officials but the hostel registration has been set on 5th of January 2015. The course registration must be done before the hostel registration for valid reasons and that the gap between the two processes probably is in few days or no gap at all. Students who wish to register for both must be quick otherwise they will have no unfavourable bedrooms and courses especially for co-curriculum subjects.

It seems that on 1st of April 2015, the government of Malaysia will be implementing the 6% Goods and Services Tax (GST) nationwide, thus prices will go up! Personally, I wonder how the fee structure for January 2015 semester will fare as most of the things such as operational cost may go up despite being exempted by GST. Hopefully, the university will not increase the fees but if it does happen, the sponsors will compensate for it.

Well that's all to it! I wish the new students all the best for their studies and that for those who are graduating, all the best in life! Keep on persistent in achieving the goal in your life until you draw your last breath.

An unforgettable experience for eight UTP students who had done their internship at Mercedes AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team (MAMGP F1 Team) as they received the 2014 F1 Constructors and Drivers World Championship.

They were Wong Yoong Xiang (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) as Car Build Intern, Lee Vuen Nee (Electrical and Electronics Engineering) as Aerodynamics Intern, Muhamad Faidsal Mohd Farid (Civil Engineering) as Aerodynamics Intern, Arvindran Gopalakrishnan (Chemical Engineering) as Purchasing Intern, Upenthiran a/l Ganeson (Chemical Engineering) as Main Inspection Intern, Muhammad Mustaqim bin Mustafa (Mechanical Engineering) as Machine Shop Inspection Intern, Chedtha Intachat a/l Somnek (Mechanical Engineering) as Machine Shop Intern and Magdalene Lee Jia Wern (Petroleum Engineering) as Planning Intern.

They achieved such an amazing feat during the course of 8 months of intern at MAMGP F1 Team from 30 September 2013 to 17 April 2014 at Brackley, United Kingdom. That was far a way from home folks!

Throughout their internship, the interns worked hard and made an all-out effort so that the tasks and responsibilities assigned to them in ensuring the winning F1 car, Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid Car, was constructed and fabricated in its optimum performance level.

“We are very proud to have assisted MAMGP F1 Team with the technical and practical capabilities learned during our study in UTP. We hope that this internship program with MAMGP F1 Team will continue for many years to come and more students representing UTP will value the experience and knowledge gained from their internship,” said Wong Yoong Xiang.

For this remarkable achievement, they received tokens of appreciation from UTP Vice Chancellor, YBhg. Datuk Ir (Dr) Abdul Rahim Hashim. YBhg Datuk also presented medals and plaque to the interns on behalf of the MAMGP F1 Team.

So as you can see, UTP is very capable in producing high quality talents for the market and provide opportunities for students to work in exciting career. What are you waiting for come and study in UTP!

VOLUNTEER MALAYSIA: An International Volunteer Day Event From UN

This coming 6th of December 2014 which is on Saturday nationwide, 1Malaysia For Youth, or iM4U for short, is organizing an event in conjunction with International Volunteer Day to celebrate the power and potential of volunteerism. The International Volunteer Day, on December 5th, was designated by the United Nations, or UN, dates back to 1985 as an international observance day.

For this upcoming Volunteer Malaysia, it will be held all over Malaysia, mostly at main cities though, at the same time from 9am to 5pm on the same day. There will be a number of tasks which are categorized in teams which include:

1. Public Art Movement
2. Green Team
3. Beach Cleanup

But these tasks will vary depending on location as not all will have a beach for example.

PETRONAS SKO Family Day 2014

The PETRONAS SKO Family Day 2014 actually has two sessions. I was surprised myself why do they even want to do two sessions of family day let alone within two weeks for both occurrence? Despite the questionable motive for setting up the event, nevertheless the second session which was held on Saturday 15th of November is the on family day I was able to join but as an event organiser instead.

The setting up of booths and stalls begin as early as 6 am in the morning probably earlier as it is crucial to for the organisers not to miss out on anything as well as maintain the quality of the presentation for that particular day. A number of booths and stalls were set up but mainly focuses on these main categories:

1. Entertainment and games.
2. Food and drinks.

The layout is pretty simple right? But you are forgiven not to overlook this simple classification of what the PETRONAS SKO Family have in store for the visitors to kick back, relax, and enjoy some family day out. 

The first thing that you will come across when stepping into the huge tent would be cosplays (well actually there is a registration counter, but hey nobody wants to know boring stuff like that!) from various renowned movie characters such Elsa from Disney's Frozen, Marvel's Ironman, and not to mention Robocop! Some kids really enjoyed that some of the parents even put on costume on their daughters to look like one of the Disney's princesses.

The middle section of the tent contains all the fun as they consists mainly of activities for children, clowns, games (not only for the young ones, but for adults as well!) such as FIFA, F1, miniature F1 racing, Guitar Hero, and coconut bowling to name a few. And did we forgot to mention there is a haunted house for the daring as well?

Once you have enjoyed yourself with fun games and activities with your loved ones, why not spoil yourself with a variety delicacies from burgers, rice, ice-cream and many more. Oh and the best part about them is that they are FREE (good going there PETRONAS)!

It's not all smooth sailing though (especially for the organisers), there are a few shortcomings as well, such as it is crowded, queuing for food was painstakingly long. Handling the kids was quite a nuisance, technical difficulties, and it was very hot! But all these were worth it, if this was your first paid job.

Throughout the event, we came across with one of our secondary school teacher from Kolej together with her kids. Her kids really enjoyed playing at our booth that they came ever so often. Our teacher was and probably is currently teaching English in Kolej. She was planning on calling us for next year's upcoming Pesta Tanjung on February which is an annual event in Kolej. Sadly, none of us will be able to lend a hand to our alma mater as we are leaving to continue our studies.

To sum it up, going back home after 3 pm was very tiring but nonetheless worth my time as I was able to learn a few things such as explaining to the visitors on how to play the game at our booth as well as getting to know a thing or two about PETRONAS SKO itself (it was my first time entering the office).

"Kalau Sudah Jodoh" Sebuah Ceramah oleh Ustaz Kazim Elias di Miri

Hari Sabtu, 15 November baru-baru ini, Ustaz Kazim Elias datang melawat Miri untuk menyampaikan sebuah ceramah bertajuk "Keluarga Bahagia" di Masjid At-Taqwa Miri berhampiran Miri City Fan pada waktu 8 malam. Jalan masuk ke masjid amat sesak disebabkan oleh bilangan kereta yang meletakkan kenderaan mereka di bahu jalan dan juga beberapa bas yang membawa penumpang serta anak-anak yatim datang untuk ceramah tersebut.

Kawasan tempat letak kereta berhampiran masjid tersebut memang tidak boleh dinafikan lagi - PENUH! Maka, sewajarnya sesiapa yang ingin mendengar nasihat Ustaz Kazim terpaksa meletakkan kenderaan mereka jauh ke kawasan Pustaka Miri atau Miri Public Pool. Sebaik sahaja tiba di perkarangan masjid, ramai sungguh jemaah yang hadir (mungkin kalah solat Jumaat) pada malam itu. Untuk duduk di dalam agak sukar kerana telah penuh. Ramai juga yang terpaksa berdiri ataupun duduk di luar masjid untuk mendengar ceramah.

Namun sepertimana majlis-majlis ilmu yang lain, ia amat berbaloi untuk dihadiri meskipun kesukaran dan kesulitan yang perlu dilalui. Dalam ceramah yang Ustaz Kazim Elias sampaikan mengambil berat mengenai hak-hak antara suami isteri yang perlu dijaga dan dititikberatkan demi mencapai kebahagiaan dalam keluarga. Terdapat beberapa isi penting dalam ceramah beliau:

1. Memuliakan tetamu.
2. Menjaga kesihatan tubuh badan.
3. Menjaga hak isteri.

Pengajaran daripada perbincangan utama adalah kita tidak sepatutnya terlampau menumpukan perhatian dalam melaksanakan ibadah tanpa mengambil kira hubungan kita sesama manusia malah terhadap diri sendiri juga. Di samping penceritaan utama tersebut, beliau juga mempunyai isu-isu sampingan yang dibincangkan untuk kepentingan umum termasuk:

1. Kempen "Touch a dog".
2. Golongan transgender.
3. Kepentingan menjaga solat berjemaah terutamanya pada waktu subuh.
4. Hikmah bersedekah.

Suasana sepanjang ceramah beliau tidaklah berat dan serius, malah amat ringkas dan lucu namun setiap patah perkataan beliau mempunyai makna yang amat penting untuk diambil sebagai peringatan dan nasihat. Kami tidak rasa bosan dan letih, sebaliknya amat tertarik dan teruja dengan gaya penyampaian beliau sungguh bersahaja dan mudah penjelasannya. Tambahan pula, penulis berpendapat Ustaz Kazim Elias amat menyukai masakan di Sarawak terutamanya mi kolok kerana beliau telah menyebutnya kira-kira 3 hingga 4 kali. Beliau sepatutnya juga cuba laksa Sarawak, konfem kaw-kaw punya!

Penulis berharap agar ramai ustaz yang terkemuka datang ke Miri, mahupun seluruh Sarawak untuk memberi lebih banyak ceramah serta peringatan agar kami lebih memahami hukum-hukum agama.

Curtin Career Fair 2014

First of all, happy Halloween to those who are celebrating! May your 31st be as scary as ever. Forget your halloween costumes though as this career fair doesn't even hint on halloween. On the day before the 31st, Curtin University Sarawak Campus has been organizing a career fair in their own basketball hall (mind you, UTP's career fair is called TEC which stands for Technology, Education and Career, which is much more grand than Curtin's hehe no offense). It was a very informative visit to those who came to search the best company to work with or have an intern with.

The three of us do not have any difficulty in locating the hall but they should have improved it by putting signboards indicating where the career fair is being done (just like how UTP has been practising it). But the major problem would be finding a suitable parking though, It is quite limited (this kind of experience somehow shares coincidentally with UTP, not a good thing). Despite the inconveniences we experienced earlier, it's worthwhile as we are greeted well from the organizers of the event and there was a lucky draw at the entrance as well! The prizes were the usual pens and keychains but the lucky ones do receive an mp3 or even a usb thumb drive!

The first booth that we came to visit was a well known company named Shell. It came to no surprise that Shell has a lot to offer to selected candidates who will either going to be recruited or to those who are looking to have an intern with. Their representative who is currently doing an intern for a month now has been describing to us what Shell has to offer. The opportunities are vast and not only for the technical side but as well as the commercial side. Another representative which is a much more experienced lady further explains to us about internship requirement as well as how the importance of a women's role in the company and how Shell has been empowering women in this sense.

Our next walk was to the Halliburton booth. After having introduced ourselves to the representatives on what we are looking for as well as our technical background, the representatives explains us on what kind of positions or jobs available in Halliburton. One of the representative (who seems quite old and experienced) has been highlighting the importance of writing a good curriculum vitae (CV) and how passion in one's career is when applying for the job. He jokingly explains that he won't hire people who just gave a simple CV template and threatens us if he sees these kinds of CVs being handed to him! CV is one of the most important step before the interview so it makes sense for us to pay close attention to it, he further explains.

Another interesting booth that visited would be PETRONAS (mind you, one of the representative is quite pretty hehe). Their representatives explained to us who should we contact to if we want to arrange an internship here in Miri with PETRONAS SKO without undergoing the central's process which usually is discover PETRONAS. But the most interesting offering they had was the PRODIGY programme. It is a 2 years programme where the trainees were given hands on training on all sorts of project regarding oil and gas industry with numerous affiliated companies such as Shell, PETRONAS and Talisman to name a few. Trainees will also be provided with transport and best of all, RM 3,000 allowances with all other fees being sponsored by the affiliated companies. Is that exciting or what! But here's the catch, only 50 limited trainees will be accepted, therefore the perks are completely justified.

We did take a look at other companies such as Sunway and Petra, but I found them giving the same advice of how important it is to know what you want to do and ensure that you have given all your best during the recruiting process. Now that we have armed ourselves with some important and relevant knowledge that are not taught in lectures, tutorials or even lab sessions, we still need to wait a few years before entering the work force. For those who will be entering the workforce soon, look no further as career fairs are a great start to find out about companies and their job offerings!

28th International CASH Baram Trophy 2014

Pagi tadi jam 8 pagi, pertandingan ragbi Piala Baram yang ke-28 telah bermula dengan perlawanan pertama pada pukul 9:12 pagi antara SM Sains Miri 1 dengan SHOAW 1 kategori junior (bawah 16 tahun). Perlawanan tersebut berakhir dengan kemenangan berpihak kepada SHOAW 1 7-21. SM Sains Miri 2 juga tidak bernasib baik seperti rakan-rakan mereka apabila bertemu dengan SHOAW 2 dengan skor sebanyak 0-39. SHOAW 1 seterusnya mengukir kejayaan apabila bertemu dengan SMK Pujut sebanyak 36-0.

Untuk kategori senior open pula, perlawanan bermula hampir tengah hari kira-kira lewat jam 10 pagi. Perlawanan antara Polis Brunei dan KRFC dimulakan. Seterusnya, Miri pula berlawan dengan Sibu di mana kemenangan berpihak kepada Sibu 14-26.

Wakil Miri untuk Piala Baram 2014, sebuah kebanggaan buat Miri

The 28th International CASH Baram Trophy Cum Piala YB Dato' Sri Peter Chin Fah Kui, 2014 merupakan sebuah pertandingan yang diadakan setiap dua tahun sekali. Pertandingan terakhir sekali yang diadakan merupakan pada tahun 2012 yang lalu. Tahun ini, pertandingan ini diadakan pada hari Sabtu dan Ahad 25 dan 26 haribulan Oktober pada pukul 9 pagi sehingga 6 petang di Stadium Miri. Walaupun pada hakikatnya pertandingan ini merupakan pada peringkat antarabangsa, namun hanya dua kumpulan daripada kategori senior open dari Brunei sahaja yang menyertai pertandingan ini.

Antara senarai kumpulan yang menyertai Piala Baram 2014 adalah seperti berikut:

2. Bintulu Rugby Association
3. Brunei Pythons

6. Sibu

Junior Under 16s:

Namun demikian, menurut senarai perlawanan, terdapat beberapa perlawanan di mana kategori mereka tidak disenarai seperti kategori ladies, di mana kaum wanita seramai dua kumpulan iaitu Miri Ladies dan Brunei Ladies, dan kategori kids, iaitu kanak-kanak juga dua kumpulan, akan bertanding.
